Reforming Internet Marketing – Is Fear Based The Only Way?

I am on a mission to reform internet marketing. Fear based marketing seems to be so prevalent yet it truly gets under my skin. 2010 is my year to shift my focus to inspiration and positive based approaches.
If you listen to much of advertising, email marketing, and such (all things I completely believe in as effective marketing tools), you might notice that the underlying assumptions include scarcity, violence, competition, and fear. If you don’t “act now” you’ll lose – limited time offers, only an idiot would do nothing, if you don’t do this you will be beaten, use this software to annihilate your competition, install this plug in to keep you “safe”, etc. Many put countdown clocks and send emails with screaming ALL CAPS subject lines with urgent pleas for your money since your very existence as a entrepreneur is in peril. Hurry!! You’re in danger! Buy now or ELSE!
I find it all a bit tiring. If you ask these marketers why they do it, they inevitably say either “it works” or “it’s how it’s done.” Is that really a good enough reason? Can’t we move into this new decade with innovative tools and new approaches? Can we learn to sell without fear? What do you think?
I am doing all I can to find my own tendencies to include a scarcity and fear mentality in my approach and I’m tossing it. Want to join me? We could start a movement…

Bless you! I too find current trend in internet marketing exhausting. Long sales pages with highlights and all caps and flashing signs with short timeframes makes me feel distrustful and while I’m sure that many of the offerings behind them are valuable, I don’t appreciate being yelled at and threatened. It feels like taking a drink from a fire hydrant! There are many great products and services out there that fill our needs…many roads lead to the same place. I choose ones that invite and inform rather than those who rant!

Thanks for sharing your view, Cindy. I agree wholeheartedly. I do believe (and have begun to see signs of it happening) that things are shifting. It still surprises me when I automatically choose to use words that aren’t uplifting – it’s a habit based on years of training and well…awareness laziness. So, committing to shifting that seems worthwhile to me. It’s an honor to have someone like yourself to join the march. Let the fun begin!

I’m sooo with you. Seems a whole bunch of us is in the process of discovering how to bring the right kind of focus to the problem/challenge without resorting to manipulation and leveraging (or poking a big pain stick at) fear.
And just for the record, the word ‘seduction’ in relationship to marketing has always made me nauseous.
Sychronicitically (doncha love how that works?) my mastermind was talking about something very similar just this morning – I may just have to podcast about it all.

@Lissa – glad to hear from a kindred spirit. For me, seduction would work if it included all the good parts, like gentle caresses, sweet nothings about how beautiful I am, and the Big O – it’s the screw me while thinking only of yourself, calling me names, and then leaving me broke & used without a second thought that doesn’t work for me (taking the analogy all the way….no pun intended). Please do podcast – the more we bring awareness, the better off we are. (Hey, btw – Morgana Rae mentioned a Lissa Boles as a great reader and guide….is that you?)
