Testimonials and My Yelp Experience

Kevin Dunn of KevinDunnMassage.comRecently, my sweetheart added his massage business to the review site Yelp and asked his massage clients to post their testimonials there.

Kevin has mostly been off line with a very loyal, nearly 100% referral and repeat-business client base for 15 years. I talked him into a website several months ago, then we moved to automated online scheduling, and last month, he agreed to do Yelp. I was puling him into the Digital Age with a little resistance, but into the Digital Age he was coming!

I set up his account and put up a big Yelp logo on his site. He started mentioning to his longtime clients that he would appreciate their feedback there. Several clients didn’t want to do it because they were afraid they’d be spammed or that their personal information was going to be shared by Yelp to its partners. Those hesitant clients sent a testimonial directly to us and we will be posting those to the website. Some clients didn’t go the the site and add their comments, even when they said they’d be happy to do so. Oh, well, what can you do?…they still refer other clients, so it’s hard to complain. Several went on the site and made recommendations for Kevin’s work that were beautiful and humbling.

As of the time of this blog post, those client testimonials are gone.

Apparently, Yelp has a secret screening algorithm that deletes testimonials that they think are spam. We had read that in the Terms of Service, so it wasn’t secret that they had it, but rather that they don’t share what triggers it. We both understood that Yelp had to figured out a way to maintain the integrity of their reviews site. It made sense, but frankly, we saw no reason to assume that testimonials from real people saying real things would fall into that category.

Here’s the rub: Once Kevin’s business account was established, we almost immediately started getting emails and calls to upsell us to Yelp’s paid advertising services. Not until we said no (well, we said not now), did the testimonials disappear. Maybe it was just that the algorithm sweep took some time to do its thing, maybe not, but gone they are.

When we asked the sales rep why the comments were gone, we were told that the comments “may have been identified as spam”. When Kevin explained the trouble he had getting his slightly old-school clients of a decade to participate at all, he was told he’s not allowed to asked people to give their feedback (even though Yelp is more than happy to give you a sign to remind people in your office). Next, he was told that the people who posted them were not “active Yelpers”, so if they ever become active, then the comments would reappear. Oh, but hey, by the way, you want to buy some advertising? As a side note, one of the reviews was from an extremely active Yelper, a fellow business owner with over 32 reviews on her site, so the explanation didn’t sit so well.

Today, I am contemplating removing the Yelp logo from Kevin’s website and I’m doing this blog post. I’m not feeling the love toward Yelp and neither is Kevin. In all honestly, as a Digital Age and New Media advocate, I am feeling quite disgruntled and angry, which is not something I usually feel toward online stuff (well except those horrific internet marketers, but you’ve heard that rant).

So, here are some lessons about testimonials I learned that perhaps you can gain some insight from:

  • Find a way to collect testimonials that fit your client base: If an online experience doesn’t fit, try a hard copy form or an audio experience or use an email extract.
  • Do more research before committing to a review site: I would not have spent the time and effort to set up with Yelp if I had known that unless your clients were “active Yelpers” that their testimonials wouldn’t show. I regret doing it.
  • Don’t let your business model get in the way of doing business: I might be singing the praises of Yelp if the expectation about testimonials had been clear up front. I wish they would honor their newest clients by giving them some help on how to integrate their service into their business – and, I don’t mean offering me a “guided tour” that is nothing more than a pay per click advertising upsell. How about maybe a 30-60 day grace period for reviewers who post testimonials for a new business account to become “active Yelpers”? This would give newbie reviewers (who I brought to your site in the first place, thank you very much!) to get caught up in it and fall in love. How exactly am I supposed to even benefit from advertising if my loyal clients’ testimonials don’t show up? That’s one expensive Catch-22.
  • People will talk about you (or worse, won’t): Perhaps you notice that I did not include the Yelp logo here, which I normally would when I talk about a business. I typically love to brag on businesses – I do it regularly in my social media and on my radio show. I usually give an active link back to them, too, something else I have not done here. That wasn’t an oversight on my part.
  • Monitor and respond to feedback: I wonder if Yelp is even monitoring their online space to see my post on these crazy interwebs. We will see. Remember – get in front of what people do when they talk about you. The sales person on the phone had no authority to help smooth our negative feelings about their process. She was towing the line. She didn’t even seem particularly sympathetic to the issue. Here’s an out of the box thought – reinstating those reviews would go a long way toward making me feel better about Yelp. But, oh, no, wait – their policy clearly states that once they’re gone, they’re gone – well, except that part about the active Yelper thing…I’m confused…A state of confusion is never a buy signal. Monitor and respond to your client feedback.

Ok, I realize that I have fallen into a rant so I’ll stop now. I have some thinking to do about that darned Yelp logo, so bye for now. I still believe in testimonials, they help your business, so go get some testimonials today!

I love great marketing. When I see clever advertising, or an attractive brand, or an engaging headline, I smile. When an individual or company can cut through the noise, or do something differently, or use a turn of phrase in an interesting or amusing way, I notice. I experienced one of these great every day marketing examples this weekend and thought I’d share it with you to enjoy and appreciate too.

I took a small trip and stayed at Hyatt Regency DFW in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. It’s a rather nice hotel and the interior design is superb. It was also the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on in a hotel. My sweetheart and I both commented that we’d buy a bed like that for our home because of its comfort.

The hotel had also done a really nice job in the paint colors, the artwork, the rugs, the bedding – everything. It just worked and made even going to the ice machine an artistic, enjoyable experience. I remember thinking about how I could duplicate the look at home for myself because I liked it so much.

As I was gathering my possessions to leave I noticed a “Hyatt at Home” brochure. Hyatt sells everything I saw in their hotel! If I want to buy that uber comfy bed, I can! If I want to have that bedspread and those pillows, they’re mine. Isn’t that cool? Everything I experienced, down to the exclusive soap and shampoo, was available for sale.

To me, Hyatt has taken a huge leap forward to integrate marketing into their customer service experience this way. It’s clever and very calculated. Even if all you do is take that brochure, you relive their hotel experience. And, Hyatt doesn’t make beds and they probably don’t own a bath soap company. They simply negotiated a branding relationship with the vendors they already used to license and market what they were already doing. They looked at the total experience they were offering and figured out additional ways to monetize it for themselves – in a way that also benefits their customers.

Like I said – I adore great every day marketing examples. I think I will apply this one more fully to my own business today. How about you? Got any great marketing examples to share?

Bootstrap Your Way To Success

Sometimes being an entrepreneur seems expensive and seriously daunting, but I have words of encouragement today. There are many affordable (and yes, free) ways to promote yourself beyond expensive ad campaigns and here are some ideas to get you going.

  1. Barter your services for promotional sponsorship ads for area events.
  2. Write topically relevant articles and submit to free article directory sites such as EzineArticles.com
  3. Submit your site (with a great description) to online directories that reach your target audience.
  4. Make comments on related audience, high ranking blogs, with active links back to your site. I use CommentKahuna to find the top ranked blogs that are relevant to what I do. It’s free and easy.
  5. Speak about your area of expertise for local groups or via teleseminar and internet radio.
  6. Answer calls from media for experts at HARO.
  7. Completely fill out all of your social media profiles, with picture and website link. Yes, ALL of them.
  8. Start a YouTube account and begin giving chats using your webcam. Upload for free.
  9. Start a BlogTalkRadio show and start reaching your target audience there. Again, it’s free.
  10. Use Craigslist to promote yourself. You have to relist your ads periodically but it’s free exposure.
  11. Use the online classified ads for all the major papers – most are free.
  12. Participate in book launch promotions where you give a free gift through a squeeze page to build your list of potential customers.
  13. Give a gift to a charity raffle which lists its contributors in their advertising.
  14. Contribute articles to magazines looking for experts. Many online magazines are hungry for new content.
  15. Get a blog – if you don’t already have one, get one today. You can sign up for free on the WordPress site and be up within the hour.
  16. Set up an eBay account and sell a teaser product there. The account is free, it allows you to take credit cards without a merchant account, and you can sell low cost items designed to drive people to your site.
  17. Interview someone interesting and post the interview on your blog. The person you interviewed will almost always list your website with a link to the interview on their site as well. I use BYOAudio ($20/month) and it handles all of my needs. I use Audacity to edit the material, and it’s free.
  18. Create a free directory listing on your website and offer a web badge that participants can post on their sites as proud members of your listing. I use a wordpress plugin that makes it easy.
  19. Create promotional items such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, and sell them on CafePress. It’s free to set up an account and it’s free advertisement when people use the products.
  20. Joint venture with others – share in the costs, barter your services instead of paying cash, and piggy back what you do with someone else who offers a complimentary service or product.

Put away your wallet and commit a bit of time and you will have some great avenues of promotion. Don’t complain or lament about the “state of the economy”. Make your own magic by jumping in with both feet into the opportunities that are out there, today, available now. Do every single one of these things with the question “What would an entrepreneur do?” and you will be amazed at the results. Best of success to you!

To Know Your Audience, Know Yourself

Technical demographic analysis and statistics can be pretty dry stuff. They can be quite helpful, but frankly, are not where you need to start to know how to market your products and services. You just need to know your audience and here’s what I recommend. 

I say, let’s start from common sense. Let’s start with YOU.

I am a firm believer in doing what you know. So, if you are a mom and you want to market children’s toys, you’ve got a pretty good basis of knowledge, don’t you? You have kids, you know what your kids like, and you can talk to the other moms you know to get info about their childrens’ preferences. You can be pretty confident that your experience carries across the market.

Following the same logic, you know how you buy too, right?  You know which ads catch your attention and which ones turn you off. You know what price points are deal makers or deal breakers. You know what time of the year or month you go shopping. You know how you prefer to be treated by the sales help in the stores. You are a knowledge powerhouse when it comes to your kids!

What else are you an expert about? Fashion, food, bill paying, education, marriage, raising a family, to name some likely choices, but the list goes on.  My point is that you have so much knowledge already in your life experience that you can begin to formulate some rather precise ideas about a market. I’m not suggesting that you isolate yourself from others’ opinions, but rather that you honor your own.

Do you use the resident expert within you or do you dismiss it as every day life stuff that has little significance? Do you have amazing excellence at your fingertips that you disregard as “I’m just being me” filler material? If you do, cut it out! Your ideas, creativity, and point of view are what make you unique, while at the same time giving you access to market demographics. You have full access to yourself and you need to plug in and go for it. 

Make a list today of all the things you are good at, that you know about. Don’t edit or critique, just let the thoughts flow. I believe you will discover a treasure trove of information to use for your business. Be willing to look at yourself from the outside and you will have your own marketing survey right under your nose. Report back what revelations you experience—we want to know!

If you are like me, you are passionate about what you do and you like to have others into it too. For me, I am quite an advocate. I like talking about investing, entrepreneurship, passive income, internet marketing, empowerment, female power, organic living…you name it. If it’s something I believe in, and it’s changed my life in a positive way, I like to spread the word.

But, this approach isn’t the way to go when you are working to acquire new business. Although it’s important to communicate the benefits of your products and services, if you’re having to convince the client, to push, to manipulate with fancy sales technique, you don’t have the sale. And, you probably don’t want it even if you do finally “win” it. Here’s why:

The people you have to convince are the hardest to sell, the most expensive to service, and are the most likely to want a refund. You’ll work your tail off for them and then they won’t refer you to their friends. Or, worst still, they will refer their friends. Since the old adage “Birds of a feather flock together” often rings true, their friends are going to be like them– a pain in your balance sheet! Convincing just doesn’t pay and it isn’t the way business is done anymore.

Advertising and marketing have changed a lot in the last decade. People’s buying behavior has changed too. They concentrate on relationships even more and they don’t buy things that they don’t already know. When was the last time you bought a book or went to a movie with little idea of what you’d be getting? It was a long time ago for me. More to the point, when was the last time you paid more for a product because you knew and trusted the vendor? I did that yesterday, was happy to do it, and I would do it again today.

It’s not that I don’t buy new inventive products. When I do, it’s because I was educated about them first. The business owner took the time to be in the market, teaching me what their product was and what it does and how it works. Even though their idea was brand new, when I finally bought, my relationship with them was not.

I’m not saying I am immune to great sales technique. None of us are. I tend to study it and admire it. But it’s not why I buy. I don’t buy because some slick salesperson knew the right “close”. Sales technique shouldn’t get in your way, but the quality of the product and the relationship drives the sale, not the sales technique.

So, what does this mean to you? Get yourself out in the market ahead of your sales pitch! Give people ample opportunity to know you and learn about your product. Educate, communicate, give people a way to learn about you prior to even contacting you (your website’s a great tool for this). Get involved in your community so your reputation preceeds you. And protect and enrich that reputation with great service and honest dealings.

If you do these things, people will come to you and they will be great clients. When you approach them, they will already know you and will be glad to see you. They’ll be a raving fan that insist their friends should deal with only you. They will buy more often, in larger amounts, and be a breeze to service. They might even become your friend. They will already be convinced from the start because they had the opportunity to be convinced by the person whose opinion they respect the most–themselves.

When you finally embrace the power of the relationship, you’ll be out of the convincing business too.

I have hit the motherlode! Yes, I am a google freak, but this is just the beginning. I am sincere when I tell you my goal is to unify the field for women entrepreners.
