Is Original Content Dead?

Do you think original content is dead? Me, not so much, but I’ve been called a dreamer.

I hear lots of people complaining about it – how the Internet is just a recycled, regurgitated mess with everyone parasitically aggregating a minuscule amount of “real news”. This usually comes from someone lamenting the death of traditional publishing or relaying the demise of true journalism. They typically either have relied on and have deeply desired someone else to tell them what to think or have made money off of a tightly controlled, elite vetting process.

Just as often, people are distressed at how our society has changed and are exhausted by the rapid crumbling of many social structures, traditional media being one example. Sadly, I have to say it – that is not going away. The world is different today than when Walter Cronkite was on TV. I wish I could be more gentle, but there it is. You can argue the merit, but it’s hard to argue the case against the fact that things have changed, and in many cases, are not going back to the way they were.

The “real ideas are dead” view, in my opinion, has little to do with the actual newsworthiness (or not) of traditional media, nor does it realistically recognize all the cool info out there on the Internet, much of which is more interesting and relevant than the Big 3 has ever provided us. Yeah, the aggregating sites that do regurgitate are out there, and I don’t much like them either. Frankly, I don’t see the Associated Press as much different. It’s now just a problem of scale – way too much scale.

In all fairness, perhaps you know someone (are someone?) who rightfully has noticed that, on the web, everyone has become a news source, and are, well, maybe just not comfortable with that. That sentiment I get, especially if you favor good grammar and spelling. Just because you blog doesn’t mean you are interesting. Just because you can say it doesn’t mean you should. Even allowing for style and freedom of speech, some people are pretty much crazy and having a podium to encourage their rants seems counterproductive to society at large. All that is a true enough observation.

I take the proactive ground on this debate. I say, if you think no one on the web is making original content, then get thee to your word processor! Become the original source! Do quality research, put a voice to what people do care about, and give us your good stuff. I don’t care if it’s investigative or editorial, just make a commitment to being quotable. Embrace the burgeoning landscape of citizen journalism and be the 21st century version of Walter C, or maybe the next best selling author, or maybe a Poet Laureate. The field is wide open and the fruit is there to be picked. (OK, I haven’t had breakfast yet….I’ll work on my metaphors…)

Here’s my challenge to you and the one I am taking up this week: I am going to go for one full week without referencing anyone else’s material. If I use a picture, it’s because I took it, drew it, or am in it (I know the peacock has nothing to do with the story, but hey, I took it, it’s beautiful – I’ll work on creating more relevant stuff). If I write about ideas, it’s ones I’ve had. If I do video or audio, I helped create it. This is an experiment to see if I can do it. It’s a chance to see if my ideas even have enough merit to be on this page. It’s a chance for us all to put up or shut up.

So, I’m asking you – are you in? Wanna play along?

Meet Michael Martine, Mr. Remarkablogger

I meet some remarkable people as I network for SmartWoman Guides. Although I enjoy nearly every one of them, once in awhile I get to know someone that really sticks out, that really shines in quality. Michael Martine is one of those types.

Michael Martine offers tons of free content and tips on blogging and internet marketing at Remarkablogger – and on Twitter. For your specific questions and to help you develop a winning plan for your blog, he offers one-on-one consulting and live group teleseminars.

Michael is an all around great guy. He coaches you on how to get more traffic to your site, but more importantly he teaches you how to get better traffic to your site. He works his magic using kindness, compassion and creativity, assisting you in developing a larger vision of what you can accomplish.

Michael talked with me about my blog and how I could use it to better achieve my goals. I agreed to let him record the session so you could hear how he coaches. It’s a great example of the insight and perspective he offers bloggers.

Remarkablogger and SmartWoman Coaching Session

We talked about the purpose I desire for my blog, what I wanted the SmartWoman brand to be ultimately, and some practical steps to implement now and in the future to get me there. If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I have already been implementing his changes. It’s a work in process but I am definitely applying what Michael and I discussed. I am excited about the changes and will continue to make them to better my brand and sharpen my focus.

Visit Michael at Remarkablogger and follow him on Twitter. He will help you and he is generous with his knowlege – get to know him.

Together, we are stronger!

Meet Zoe WesthoffI am part of a blogging experiment of sorts, Bloggers Helping Bloggers, initiated by Chuck Westbrook. He started a campaign to get high quality, but less famous bloggers noticed and, being that it’s a SmartWoman article of faith that together we are stronger, I bought in. Great idea to help each other, right?

Chuck made his first blog selection and it’s a wonderful choice: Zoe Westhoff of Essential Prose

Zoe is a young American writer, living expat in Thailand. She talks about creativity and how to avoid over planning yourself out of it. She discusses taking action, taking leaps of faith, to do what you love – to let your purpose loose on the world. She uses strong vocabulary with poise and skill. I am thoroughly enjoying reading her blog and am grateful to Chuck’s work to feature Zoe. It is enriching me and I believe it will enrich you too.

I would ask you to go visit Zoe’s blog, Essential Prose, and check out what she’s doing. If you like what you see, here are some ways to help promote her:

  • Tweet it out on Twitter -not on Twitter? Sign up today! My user name is SmartWoman – I’ll follow you there once you sign on.
  • Profile her on your blog – encourage your readers to check Zoe out.
  • Recommend Zoe’s blog in your newsletter. If you didn’t know about her, your readers probably don’t either. They’ll appreciate the fresh information.
  • Be inspired by one of the topics Zoe writes about, create a blog post about that, and reference her.
  • Write about Chuck’s efforts on your blog
  • Read Zoe’s blog and let it touch you in a needed area of your life – we all need creative support
  • Hit all your other social media site and promo her there

Why would you want to do all these things? Because highlighting others feels good, sure, but also, it gives your own readers/clients value. Sharing your spotlight and influence increases your credibility as an expert and authority power point. By providing useful information, you become the go-to source of interesting and helpful stuff, and that in turn makes others want to be with you more and want to share you with their friends.

All good leaders recognize others. All successful business people tell others about the people they meet that are worth knowing. Like a private recommendation to a four star restaurant, these tips will lead you to resources that you didn’t have previously. It also provides you more depth and breadth of reach, as once you know someone, they know you, too, right? Like that old commercial, they tell a friend, who tells a friend, who tells a friend, and so on.

By going to Zoe’s blog and posting comments to the posts that you feel are relevant, your website link will be seen by all of the individuals who are participating in Chuck’s campaign. You could also be one of the blogs that Chuck chooses to feature in the future. Imagine thousands of individuals reading your blog every day and telling others about you. What could that do for your business? For your life? For your faith in continuing during difficult times? I bet, quite a bit. So, another advantage of promoting Zoe and Chuck is that you get to feel the warmth of their flame. Your associations get noticed too.

If you aren’t into Zoe’s blog, find a way to promote someone else in your life. Profile your clients on your site, refer a friend to another business person, talk someone else up to a stranger. Your network and your net worth will increase. It’s good for all of us.

Together, we are stronger!

In the month of September, I have been focused on adding monetization opportunities to my blogging activities. If you intend to make a living online, it’s an important thing to do. Really, it’s important to do offline too. Create something to sell and sell it, right?

By creating my 30 products in 30 days project, I have been motivated to focus on my business. It’s helped me to realize the ways I like to make money and even the ways I don’t want to do so.  Many of you have expressed that you are following along and doing some of the same ideas for your business. That’s all good, but, I feel the entire project has had a downside.

When I first started blogging, I did more talking about starting a business, finding meaningful work, and sticking to it than anything else. I liked talking about those things and I am returning back to it as of today. You can still learn about my 30 in 30 progress if you want – I will put together a post collecting all the days’ work together, but for now, I am leaving reporting of it behind.

Chris Brogan, one of the great people in blogging and on Twitter, recently wrote a post entitled 50 Ways To Take Your Blog To The Next Level. It’s a great list of what you can do to make your blog better, and I am taking it to heart. So, get ready for us to return to the basics.

I believe in women entrepreneurs and one of my deepest desires is to empower them. Here at SmartWoman Guides, I want to build a safe haven where emerging women entrepreneurs can thrive, and learn, and share. I want to stand as a voice for the ones who aren’t able to speak. I want to amplify the growing voice of those who are speaking. I want to be of service in whatever way is needed.

Basically, I want to add value to that conversation, to that group. So, 30 in 30 continues, but from here on out, we’re talking about women entrepreneurs and that’s all. Let’s take over the world, ladies! It’s in our power to revolutionize what’s happening here and it’s time we did it! We can raise our children to be more compassionate, we can shift elections toward our issues, we can ignite our passion, increase our contribution, and we can create a world through our hearts and hands where we can all be happy and well. I believe in the power of women in business and I invite you to join in.

Together, we are stronger.

My love affair with John Cow continues. I am a staunch supporter of his blog and what he does. I encourage you all to fall in love with the CowBoy too. The site is actually a three way partnership effort from some of the best internet marketers in the business so their advice is totally worthwhile. They are generous with their support and advice and on the leading edge of what works and what doesn’t (without any of the bull, shady techniques of some other marketers). Yes, I am biased, but don’t take my word for it – find out for yourself!

I’ve offered this before, but if you haven’t already, get your 130 pg. free “Building a Business Not a Blog” ebook on how to start a new blog from the ground up. It’s straightforward and relatively easy. Like following a recipe! I can recommend it without reservation. (Hint- I also get amazing, high quality traffic when I post to the JohnCow blog with a link back – you could too if you just got involved!)

John Cow also has great resources to help you promote your blog once you get it going, so take a taste of their style by getting the free stuff and then see if it piques your interest for some of their other products, like CommentKahuna and TrafficKahuna. They’re affordable and effective – I use them and find them easy to use and very helpful.

Enjoy the goodies and contact me if I can help you further!

Together, we are stronger.

Do You Like To Watch? Cow vs. Conn

Do you like to watch? I do! :-)

If you want to watch over the shoulder of two great marketers who make money online from blogging, here’s your chance.

Monday May 19th launches a cool blog contest between John Cow and Garry Conn and you can take part in it for free.

It’s a great promotional stunt and the proceeds for the winner (at least on John Cow’s side–not sure about Garry Conn) have been pledged to charity. These two guys probably drink beer together as friends, so I can’t tell you they are mortal enemies competing. Truth is, they might be, but I can’t say. Does it really matter? Personally I signed up for both of their information so I could learn from both teams.

It costs you nothing to watch over their shoulders as they launch new blogs and build them into revenue streams. You can emulate what they do for your blog and enjoy the fruits for yourself. They are also offering free prizes (lots of cool software, promo sponsor spots, etc.) for you helping them promote it.

If you have an interest in doing this, go for it.  I am! I think it will be fun. We can discuss the things we learn here as they go along.

Just in case you are not ready to pick sides yet, here are both of their websites. Both are offering phenomenal classroom training for free showing you what they are doing. Enjoy!

p.s. YES, I am trying to get SmartWoman more exposure by posting this contest info. I firmly believe more women need to learn about our community here, so I am not ashamed. It seems a harmless thing to promote a contest that I am participating in if it means more women come visit here. Are you ok with that? I hope so. If not, let me know and I will delete this post. This is your community and your opinion and vote counts.
