Priests and PowerI know it’s a tough statement to suggest that bad Internet Marketers have anything in common with pedophile priests. I have friends who have experienced the ravages of pedophilia, who have had their trust broken, their bodies and minds violated and damaged, and more. It affects a person in ways which most of us can only begin to imagine. I am not, in any way, looking to downplay the negative effects of sexual abuse and it’s serious aftermath here.

But, I ask you to sit quite seriously with this potential metaphor and hear me out. This is a topic that is very important to me and one I am willing to step out on a very thin limb to discuss.

As a business coach, I have spent countless hours with people who feel hopeless, in despair, broken and downtrodden. They tell me the stories of how they have spent thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of their hard earned dollars on learning how to market online. They sincerely pour their heart, their hope, their very souls into the techniques that are sold to them through aggressive, psychologically manipulative, and even deceptive methods. And, live events – oh, my! Some of those events are thinly disguised arm twisters ripe with pressure filled desperation! I have attended events where I felt short of breath from the palpable force being exerted in the name of the great dollar.

Hidden triggers in copywriting, tricky up-sell strategies, insulting deprecations of the customer’s character through innuendo and direct verbiage, and very very small fine print in forced continuity programs can be found just about any day you care to look. Wildly fabulous success stories, glowing testimonials, fancy clothes and cars, and more seem to be on every corner.  Add in heavily reinforced personas of charismatic authority figures who will gladly share their Secret of Secrets if only you would quit being a lazy idiot and take action, and you’ve got a hot mess on your hands.

Are these customers stupid? Are they too gullible? Are they callous and selfish opportunity seekers who deserve what they get? Are they just cry babies who should shut up, toughen up and get their PhD in the School of Hard Knocks? Or, perhaps because they are legally adults, they don’t deserve or need to have anyone speaking up to protect them from these unscrupulous practices? I mean, seriously – everyone knows that adults are supposed to stand on their own two feet, take responsibility for their choices, live and learn, and quit whining, right?

I’ve actually heard marketers say that their customers should learn to protect themselves – nobody “makes” them do anything. The tricky sales copy is just helping these people make a choice. These chumps…uh, I mean customers…wanted to do what they did. Hey, they practically asked for it by being so willing to be seduced. Buyer beware, right? If you don’t want to be treated like a sheep, don’t act like one, right? Besides, that’s just how it is, it’s how it’s done. I’ve been sold a bill of goods plenty of times and I lived to tell the tale. If they didn’t buy from me, some other schmuck would be taking their money. One even told me it’s a rite of passage to be ripped off. Wow….the contempt and disregard inherent in these marketers’ behavior is beyond evident. To say that hyperbole has run rampant would be seriously understating the issue.

In all fairness, there is some truth to the call for consumer awareness here (this is where our metaphor digresses – blaming the sexual abuse victim is certainly not appropriate).  Even still, in our metaphor example, consider this: Blaming the victim here isn’t really appropriate either. Anyone who has sat with a newly minted 18 year old, technically an adult in the eyes of the law, knows that deep wisdom to differentiate and maturity to detect manipulation doesn’t happen just because you are considered an adult. More over, no matter your age, if you are learning something new, especially something so intensely personal, emotional, and important as building a business, you are potentially quite gullible and very likely uninformed. You may be in a state of profound confusion about the direction of your life and, in your view, everything is on the line. Your entire identity and self worth is in the mix and the stakes are incredibly high. You could easily be considered the vulnerable at-risk party who deserves protection from these highly sophisticated, deliberate, and experienced marketing powerhouses.

Maybe these gurus don’t give a bone about the impact to your state of mind, but I’ve seen firsthand the cycle over and over. I’ve worked to help these individuals recover and begin to build again. Trust lost is not easily regained. This is not some kind of game. It’s serious business and the millions of dollars being made confirms it. Big business, big money, big stakes for everyone.

Here’s what I say – No one deserves to be taken advantage of. Period.

These fine people agree to exchange their dreams and their money to build a better life for themselves and their families. They have the trust and innocence of a child and look to a higher figure of authority to help them. When these trusting souls become disillusioned, their potential to contribute is heavily impacted. We all lose out when people are damaged and are left struggling to be good citizens in the community. Some recover and go on to achieve great things. Many do not.

Some would say these people are “adults” and shouldn’t be so trusting. They should read the fine print, should “know” better. If it sounds too good to be true, it must be, right? To this, I say a full out BULL CRAP!!!

Dubious Internet Marketing techniques are abuses of power and a violation of trust. Much like the pedophile priests who molest the children in their care, these business people are dishonoring the delicate position of power they are entrusted with. They know what they are doing and seem willing to do many questionable things to continue their practices. And, sadly, much like the apparent behavior of the Catholic Church, it is not unheard of that these same players in the industry move on to participate in the background of other Internet Marketing friends’ launches (no, it’s not all of them; no, I won’t be naming names; and, no, I am not referencing anyone specifically. This is a bigger issue than that).

Putting gossip, misinformation, and secrecy aside, there are just too many people expressing anger and resentment over being played to ignore. Strict adherence to high ethical standards is what we need in order to see the industry come clean. It’s no longer good enough that something “works”, i.e. makes money. Maybe it never was, frankly, but this issue certainly has reached a tipping point now. It’s time for everyone to benefit and no one to get pinched.

I know great Internet Marketers who have impeccable integrity. These are not the ones I am talking about and I think it’s past time for all of us to face this issue head on. As much as we might prefer to extend the benefit of the doubt, deny the problem for loyalty’s sake, hide it under the rug due to embarrassment, or keep quiet because the questionable techniques are the one we learned (and darn it, we’re going to get what we paid for), this has to stop. Today. Now.

I encourage you to unsubscribe from any and every marketer who disrespectfully calls you names, who pressures you to buy now or else, and who ridicules your efforts to make a great living online. If your gut tells you to move on, do so. If you can’t quite put your finger on the feeling but you know something isn’t right, get out of there. The less each of us tolerate this treatment when we are cognizant of it, the faster it will become less profitable for these practices to be used. We can affect a change. Abuse is not an acceptable business practice.

As a side note – thank you to all the people online who are doing it right, with integrity, fairness, compassion, and transparency. You are the shining lights.

Together, we are stronger!

p.s. To read more about some of these traditional techniques, read Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini. (This is a not a paid affiliate link). Cialdini describes these techniques, why they work, and how to avoid getting caught up in them without realizing it. This book, although not inherently intended to harm people, is usually the stepping off point for many of the more serious manipulation techniques.

I am on a mission to reform internet marketing. Fear based marketing seems to be so prevalent yet it truly gets under my skin. 2010 is my year to shift my focus to inspiration and positive based approaches.

If you listen to much of advertising, email marketing, and such (all things I completely believe in as effective marketing tools), you might notice that the underlying assumptions include scarcity, violence, competition, and fear. If you don’t “act now” you’ll lose – limited time offers, only an idiot would do nothing, if you don’t do this you will be beaten, use this software to annihilate your competition, install this plug in to keep you “safe”, etc. Many put countdown clocks and send emails with screaming ALL CAPS subject lines with urgent pleas for your money since your very existence as a entrepreneur is in peril. Hurry!! You’re in danger! Buy now or ELSE!

I find it all a bit tiring. If you ask these marketers why they do it, they inevitably say either “it works” or “it’s how it’s done.” Is that really a good enough reason? Can’t we move into this new decade with innovative tools and new approaches? Can we learn to sell without fear? What do you think?

I am doing all I can to find my own tendencies to include a scarcity and fear mentality in my approach and I’m tossing it. Want to join me? We could start a movement…

I know I am not alone when it comes to time management…I know there are tips and techniques to manage your time better – heck, I’ve even written about it! HA!

What happened to Days 9 and 10? Their reporting, although not the original goal of creating new revenue streams, got engulfed in the following cool things that are coming up:

I created a new product, a Meaningful Work meditation audio that is going to be used as a bonus for Joe Vitale’s upcoming release of the latest Attactor Factor. Buy Joe’s book and get tons of bonuses, or alternately, you can get my audio for free through the month of September.

I completed another product: Web Traffic 101 – a beginner’s guide to understanding the basic lingo and concepts of search engine optimization, keywords, traffic, etc.  It’s designed specifically to help you get the mindset needed to begin making money online, presented in fun and easy to understand language.  This is a bonus for Joe Vitale’s Operation Yes charity event, where he is working to end poverty through knowledge and self-empowerment. Again, this is a September freebie special, whether you get involved with Operation Yes or not. You can sign up to receive the audio by going to my parent site, SmartWoman Publishing – sign up box is in the upper right corner.

I attended the COOLEST meetup with other Austin-TX area internet marketing entrepreneurs – some of my heroes, like Craig Perrine, Pat O’Bryan and too many others to name. I actually fit in and made many friends and picked up several Twitter friends (follow me @smartwoman). Any time you can attend a physical gathering of like minded friends, do it. I was able to meet some of my Twitter buddies face to face and it enriches and deepens the relationships even more.

This week, I saw my name and face on the same webpage as some of my favorite spiritual speakers and thinkers, like Jack Canfield, Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Mark Victor Hansen, and so many more (it was just a mock up but will be real on the 16th).  I am offering the Web Traffic audio mentioned above as a bonus for Eldon Taylor’s upcoming drive to help raise charitable funds to support women worldwide to become financially self-reliant. It’s quite a thrill and I tell you this more to promote the event than brag on myself (I am still dumbstruck that I am involved with a project that has so many people I admire  – it’s a hoot!). More details will be forthcoming very soon.

The theme? Giving. We get what we give away. I am offering products that I believe in, that I intend to charge for, and that I gave my best effort to produce. There was nothing ”tossed off” about them. My intention is to not only provide service, but to strengthen the energetic pull of people who would enjoy my story, my point of view, and the community I am working to build here.

So, what have you done today to continue the flow of money toward you?  What have you given away?

Together, we are stronger.

As we delve more deeply into making your website effective, let’s talk domain names.

As tempting as it is to pick something cute or maybe automatically pick your business name, please consider this. To get the most bang for the buck, your domain name needs to be highly correlated to what you do.

Say you own a high end boutique flower shop. Even if your business name is Sally Schmitz Inc., do you think anyone looks for a high end boutique flower shop using the search words Sally or Schmitz? Not probably. The people who do know your actual name also are likely to know how to find you already, so that’s not really our focus. Our focus should be coming up on a google or yahoo search when people who buy what you sell are looking to buy.

But, maybe you’ve had your business name forever and you already have a website in that name. Let’s say that the name isn’t that reflective of what you do–for example, Sally Schmitz Inc rather than Sally’s Flower Boutique. Even if you don’t want to change it, I would still encourage you to purchase and develop a web name that does reflect specifically what you do also. You can redirect the less searchable website name to the better one without losing any traffic. We will discuss how to do that later in the week.

I purchase the majority of my site names through GoDaddy. I have been extremely happy with their service and tools and pricing. You can often get a domain name for as little as $1.99 per year if you purchase hosting at the same time, which is a screaming deal since you need hosting too. That’s usually what I do.

Here’s how to reach them:

There are many software tools available to discover the best name, and we will further the discussion more tomorrow, but today we are going to use our intution. For the sake of developing your mindset, let’s have a little fun with it. We’re going on a fishing expedition!

Enter the words you would type into google if you were looking to find your business, one phrase at a time. See what comes up. Try a bunch of different ways that you think your customer might look for you.

For our Sally’s Flower Boutique example, we might type in flowers, gifts, wedding flowers, flower shops, luxury flowers, flower arrangements, flower delivery, birthday flowers, high end bouquets, floral designers, roses, graduation presents, corsages. Get creative and attempt to exhaust as many possibilities as you can.

Go visit the top 10 or 20 sites you see when you type in these phrases. Look and learn. Does your current site show up? Where is it ranked relative to other shops? Notice which sites come up for multiple phrases. See how they rate to your business offerings. Do they serve the same clientele as you? Make note of sites where you could potentially add your link and cross promote. Begin thinking in terms of connecting with your client and broadening your network.

Not only notice what your competition is doing, but also see if you actually find what you were looking to find. Assuming you are intuitively on track with what words your clients use to find you, you are now looking at the landscape in which you will be competing and succeeding. You are looking at not only your competition but also potential partners and referral friends.

Tomorrow, I will list some software tools you can use to continue moving forward with developing an effective website for your new business. Thanks for dropping by.

Together, we are stronger.

Pushy marketing really, well, pushes my buttons. Not the “buy now” button or the “let me tell all my friends about you” button. No, more like the “opt-out, delete, don’t ever send me another email” button and the “I am selling your stuff on e-bay today to get the stench out of my house” button. Not pretty.

What has me so hot and bothered? I received an email recently from an internet marketer who had sent a big freebie bonus offer to me. The marketer was apologizing for having referred me to someone who was so relentless in his sales pitch (fortunately, since I had not opened the offer yet, I had been spared. I felt sad for all the others who had not been). This IM wonder said he was sorry if I had been offended, being sent a free offer, that I had to go through sales page after sales page of hard hitting, multiple offers. He said he thought it was a fun salemanship roller coaster ride and hey, the guy makes big money with these techniques, so it’s all good. GRRRRR….

I’m here to tell all you internet marketers out there that, NO, it is not all good. Especially for women buyers, these techniques no longer cut it (if they ever did) and it would be a wise move, in the new social media Web 2.0 environment, for you all to get on board and get over yourself. I can’t speak for all women, but having tolerated this treatment through the thousands of dollars of products I have bought over the years, I know I am not the only one who doesn’t like what you’re putting down.

Here are the top 3 things internet marketers should stop today if you want to sell to more women.

1. No more sports and war analogies. I am an avid boxing fan. I play around at golf. I know many women who love watching and playing sports. But, sinking a slam dunk, having home court advantage, or scoring a hole in one is not the only way to describe business success. Being a player isn’t that great either (women give a fake phone number to players, not their credit card info). I am not a road warrior and I am not out to make a killing. I am not afraid of who else is out there in the market because I know my USP. I don’t need to be pitted against another human being to make my way in this world.

I am a professional business woman with a college degree, a busy life, and a passionate, vested interest in my client. I don’t want to annihlate the competition. I’d rather joint venture with them and achieve synergy. Could you sell me something by focusing on providing great service and value without me having to butcher anyone, please? No more drop dead anything, ok?

2. No more “buy now or else” and “here today, gone tomorrow” strategies. A one of a kind Monet painting is priceless. Your eBook or mentoring program is not. You can and do crank those puppies out faster than I can eat chocolate ice cream, so just stop it. Don’t artificially create or inflate scarcity. It causes me to doubt your customer service, your commitment to your client, and your ability to actually give me real value. Your 100% money back guarantee means nothing if you’re out of business. Fly by night sales technique makes me wonder if you will be around to fulfill your promises. On top of that, my life (contrary to your narrative) will still be good without your product, so you don’t need to tell me how I’m a loser or an undedicated hack unless I get off my butt now and buy your product. Bull. Bull. Bull.

It’s especially irritating when I find your “today only” sale on a google search 6 months later. That doesn’t do much for my trust in you. Are you a going concern or not? Act like it! Most women buy through trusted sources and thoroughly investigate before buying. Once they buy, they tend to be fiercely loyal. Offer me a long term relationship and I will reward you with money and more referrals than you can shake a stick at. Are you interested in that or not?

3. No more hidden, auto-renew memberships as bonuses. Offering a month or two of free access (after which time you will begin charging my credit card $39 a month) to your paid membership site as a “free” bonus, among a zillon other bonuses on a long sales page is just plain deceitful. Sure, it’s all there in writing. Sure, you’re following the letter of the law. I know the opt-out rates are low because people just aren’t observant. But if it’s really ok with you to build your business on apathy rather than true value, count me out.

Your membership site should give me so much great advice and assistance that I am banging down your door to renew. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t deserve to be on auto-pay. I know these techniques work to make money, but so do SPAM scams from a foreign diplomat. I’m not suggesting that this approach is criminal on that level, but as a woman, I value transparency, forthrightness, and being given a fully informed choice. Betrayal lasts a long time for most of us, and the old adage of a woman scorned does have some truth in it. Be bold enough to lay it all out and let me choose. No tricks, no hiding, no deception. Respect my ability to recognize a great deal and act on it. Spend more time on how you can actually benefit me rather than polishing the vanishing act routine. You’ll get my business if you do.

I know I have painted with a broad brush here. I am not a self-appointed female representative. I have to edit myself too, because I have learned marketing from mostly men who use these techniques. But editing yourself for your audience is what professional marketers do. Learning what makes your client buy is the key. (you see, I wanted to say the name of the game there, but I edited myself…hint…). I also recognize that the buyer has full culpability in this process too, which is why I am speaking up. And opting out. And building a better approach for my clients (and yes, selling off some of the worst offenders’ stuff on ebay.)

Times are changing. Permission marketing, a la Seth Godin, is where things are moving. And, women worldwide open and run more small businesses than any other single group. We make 70%+ of the purchasing decisions in households. We are well educated, dedicated, and street smart. We’re not some little girl who gets giddy when you tell her how cute she looks (although we do enjoy sincere compliments) and we all already have a daddy. We aren’t on a man basher crusade (most of us). We are business women with money to spend. Do you want some of it? Following these tips could help. Try it and see if you can score a homerun with your sales. :-)

NOTE: For those of you with limited time and no desire for the back story, you can go straight to the sign up page by clicking here: Your Internet Cash Machine Book Sampler

Don’t be in such a hurry that you cheat yourself out of the free bonuses info though–read below! It won’t take long and it will be worth it! :-)

For those of you with a minute or two on your hands:

Even though he’s a mega-star of metaphysics now, Joe Vitale, one of the stars of The Secretis one of my original marketing gurus from way back. He’s a really interesting guy and I got to go to his birthday party late last year. The picture above captured the moment (that’s me in the middle!)

He and Jillian Coleman Wheeler co-authored a book about using the internet to build a business, called Your Internet Cash Machine: The Insiders Guide to Making Big Money, Fast!

I worked with Jillian on the book release and can say unequivocally that it is full of great stuff–very practical and relevant, not empty hype and pushy tactics. And, it’s usable on several different business models.

During the book launch marketing process, I helped Jillian create a sampler taken directly from Your Internet Cash Machine and have convinced her to let me offer it here to my readers.

The sampler has enough good ideas in it that you should be able to benefit just reading that alone; that’s how we designed it to be–a true sample of the work, not just teaser material.  You will need to provide your email when you request the sampler so the link can be sent to you directly.

To sign up for your copy of the Your Internet Cash Machine book sampler, click below:
Your Internet Cash Machine Book Sampler

I have also secured permission from Jillian to allow you to visit the purchase bonus page that was originally used for the launch. There you will find literally thousands of dollars of related stuff that you will get to download for free by providing your email and Amazon receipt number.

Here’s how to claim the purchase bonuses:

  1. Purchase the book at Amazon or your preferred book seller.
  2. Next, go to the bonus website and enter your name and receipt  #.
  3. Enjoy your bounty and claim your bonuses!

I signed up for the bonuses and enjoyed them. I can say first hand that I did not get spammed with useless stuff once I did. But, you will have to decide for yourself the tolerance you have for communication with new businesses and their information.

All the bonuses include a good description, so you can opt-in to some and not others (which I confess, I also did–not all of them appealed to me). I have not had any problem later opting-out of various emails too. A very good experience overall.

So, have fun! At least get the Sampler–it’s a good read.

Together, we are stronger.

p.s. Darn, that’s a good looking launch page, if I say so myself! :-)

Qassia: Better than Squidoo and Wikipedia

Qassia is this great encyclopedic website where you can post “intel” for free and get backlinks to your website, advertising credit, and advertising revenue. It’s in private beta-version now so you can only join through invitation so here’s the link
Qassia Private Invitation Link

You add info–not just egghead stuff, but normal stuff–and you get points for it. You get points for posting intel (if it’s original & never published, you get the most). You get points for reviewing and rating other people’s intel. You get points for referrals.

Unlike Wikipedia, your stuff won’t get edited but the users rate it. You can write in any voice or style you want. It can be something as simple as the great neighborhood bars in Soho to a thesis on evolution. Whatever floats your boat!

The points are rewarded in ”Qassia dollars” that determine your ranking on their pages. More networth, more visibility. They are also tossing around the idea that you might get to spend your virtual dollars on other stuff, but that’s not decided yet.

Also, they will pay you 100%  of the revenue from the Adsense ads that people click through while they are on your intel page. So, if you have good stuff that people like reading (and more of it), the likelihood of people clicking on relevant ads goes up. That could mean cha-ching in your bank account!

I have added 16 articles about search engine optimization and internet marketing. If nothing else, go read my articles. If the site looks interesting to you, sign up. Why not, right?

Qassia’s goal is to bloom into a vast intelligence engine, with content that real people, like you and me, create. The community does not encourage pitching, so don’t do it–you will be smacked down for that, but I have had many people visit my blog and email me from the articles I’ve posted.

If you provide real value and service, you will be rewarded. Here’s the link again:
